A MOTHER’S LOVE

I have not found the word, I cannot find
One single phrase to satisfy my mind,
Or any synonym that might express
A mother’s love- that love with power to bless
The love of any child within her care,
An expended love, and yet enough to share
With other children if there be a need …
Elastic, tender is that love, indeed.
It is spent, yet saved; it is emptied, yet filled up.
As steady rain will brim an upheld cup.
It is gentle and yet tiger-fierce when harm
Threatens her young through any quick alarm.
It is selfless as the love of Christ for humans.
It is holy, it is beautiful, but when
The seeking heart strives to define its worth …
There is no word for it in heaven or earth!

-Grace Noll Crowell

A MOTHER’S SHARE

A school teacher asked a boy this question about fractions: “Suppose your mother baked an apple pie, and there were seven of you—your parents and five children. What part of the pie would you get? “A sixth, Ma’am,” the boy answered. “But there are seven of you,” said the teacher. “Don’t you know anything about fractions?” “Yes,” replied the boy, “I know all about fractions, but I know all about Mother, too. She would say she did not want any pie.”

The day of Pentecost is the church’s festival of the Holy Spirit. It is the third principal festival of the church year, the day on which we remember how the Holy Spirit came powerfully to a gathering of Jesus’ followers in Jerusalem. But Pentecost is more than remembering a past event; it is also a day to celebrate the gift of faith to people throughout the world, the fulfillment of Christ’s promise to be with us always, and the bestowal of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

The two most common Pentecost symbols represent the Holy Spirit. A descending dove is frequently used to symbolize the coming of the Spirit, since the Gospel of Luke reports that the Holy Spirit came to Jesus at his baptism in the form of a dove.(Luke 3:33) Tongues of fire are also used to symbolize the Holy Spirit, based on an account of Pentecost found in Acts 2:1-4. The liturgical color for the Day of Pentecost is bright red, which reminds us of the fire of the Spirit.

Memorial Day originally was designated as a day to honor and remember those who had given their lives in the Civil War. As time progressed, the theme came to include a remembrance of all the military who had died in defense of our country.

With the passage of more time, people began to include memories of all those whose lives were a blessing to others before they passed from this earth. In my Canadian heritage I remember the Day being called, “Decoration Day.” It was a day for placing flowers on the graves of loved ones who had passed.

I can surely identify with that concept because it helps us, in our memories, to reflect on how we got to be who we are and where we are. In my mind, I recall my dad and mom who were Godly people who taught me truths and life lessons that I refer to as , “Precious Memories.”

Although you and I are prone to forget some less important details at times, I pray that God will keep alive and active your “Precious Memories.”

Pastor Jerry
PRECIOUS MEMORIES

Precious memories, unseen angels
Sent from somewhere in my soul
How they linger ever near me
And the sacred scenes unfold
Precious father, loving mother
Fly across the lonely years
And those old home scenes of my childhood
In fond memory appear.

CHORUS:
Precious memories, how they linger
How they ever flood my soul
Then, the stillness of the midnight
Precious sacred scenes unfold.

What is Communion and why do Christians observe it? Unlike Baptism, which is a one time event, Communion is a practice that is meant to be observed over and over throughout the life of a Christian. It is a holy time of worship when we corporately come together as one body to remember and celebrate what Christ did for us.

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body. “Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” Matthew 26:26 (NIV)

Communion in our church is always celebrated on the first Sunday of each month and also on other occasions throughout the church year. We welcome everyone to partake of Communion. Please join us.

Who We Are
The United Church of Christ acknowledges as its sole head, Jesus Christ, Son of God and Saviour. It acknowledges as kindred in Christ all who share in this confession. It looks to the Word of God in the Scriptures, and to the presence and power of the Holy Spirit to prosper its creative and redemptive work in the world. It claims as its own the faith of the historic Church expressed in the ancient creeds and reclaimed in the basic insights of the Protestant Reformers. It affirms the responsibility of the Church in each generation to make this faith its own in reality of worship, in honesty of thought and expression, and in purity of heart before God. In accordance with the teaching of our Lord and the practice prevailing among evangelical Christians, it recognizes two sacraments: Baptism and the Lord’s Supper or Holy Communion.
